          Deathwatch, by Robb White takes place in a northern California desert in the early 1970s.  Ben, the main character, is trying to make some money for college by guiding Madec, a bighorn sheep hunter, around the desert.  Madec sees what he thinks is a bighorn and shoots it, but it turns out to be an old man living in the desert.  Madec is afraid of getting into trouble, so he tries to eliminate his only witness, Ben. Ben is stripped of all clothes and supplies, and forced by Madec to find his way to safety.  As Ben tries to find civilization he first has to find water, and hide from Madec, who is trying to kill him with his .358 magnum rifle.

           This song sends the message not to give up.  While Ben is stranded in the desert and running from Madec, he has to have the power to stay alive and not give up. With his goal to stay alive, the one thing Ben does not want to do is give up to Madec and die.

      This song's chorus and 1:58 to 5:01 sung about being treated with no love (hate), and being able to over come that and defeat the person treating you with hate.  This song relates to Ben and Madec's relationship.  Madec has treated Ben with no love, and so far, Ben has over come his struggles with Madec.

          So far to me, this book sucks.  Robb White has very good description, but the story is very boring up to the point of where I've read (pages 1- 130).  At the beginning, there was a little bit of action, but from about page 30 and up the story has been very boring.  To make the story more exciting, Robb White should have added something like a fight between Ben and a lion or something else to make the story more exciting and more enjoyable.  This story has been super boring so far, and I am hoping that it will change soon and become less boring.

          The first important symbol in Deathwatch is the jeep.  The jeep represents shelter and staying alive.  With the jeep, Madec is able to survive and live easily, but Ben, the one without the jeep has to struggle to survive.  The jeep provides shelter, food and protection.  Near the middle of the story, Ben traps and ties up Madec.  Ben leaves Madec behind and takes the jeep to safety.  Who ever has the jeep in the story is the one who is able to survive and keep safety.  Without the jeep, Ben would mot have been able to make it to civilization alive.

          Another symbol in Deathwatch is the .358 magnum gun that Madec owned.  The .358 magnum represent death and survival.  With the .358 magnum, Madec killed a man living and roaming in the desert.  As Ben was forced to roam the desert, he was also hunted by Madec and his .358 magnum at the same time.  Ben was very lucky that he wasn't shot by Madec.  If Ben was able to use the .358 magnum, he could have been able to survive easier because it would have been easier for him to kill animals to eat.  Even though the .358 magnum brought death, it could still bring life by killing animals for food and survival.

          The last symbol is the slingshot that Ben found.  The slingshot represents escape and survival.  As Ben had to survive in the desert, the slingshot helped him by being able to kill animals.  Without the slingshot, it would have been a lot harder for Ben to kill the animals, and he probably would have not been able to survive.  At the end of the story, Ben had to use his slingshot to stop Madec and escape from the cave.  If Ben didn't have the slingshot, it would have been way harder for him to escape from Madec and get to safety.  The slingshot gave Ben food and a chance to escape and without out it he probably would have died.
